Ego Printing: A new 3D printing business model.

003D printer, Fun, Modeling, new technology, Post, Printer DealerTags: , , ,

A company in my hometown, Barcelona is selling a new product: yourself.
The idea is that you go to the photo studio, get scanned with a 3D scanner and after paying 99€, a color 3D model of yourself is printed.

My question is: Why would you like to have a 3D printed YOU?

Different situations come to my mind … People in love leaving far away?, kids missing their parents or parents missing their kids maybe because they study or work abroad?, or grandparents missing all of them… Who knows?

Its a new business model and a new opportunity that 3D printers are bringing to us.
Check out this video and see how it works:

Does your printer needs ink transfusion? what about 1/2 liter?

Yes, there is a company called ink bags that supplies ink for your inkjet printer in bags like the ones used for blood. Yes it’s like a never ending cartridge. Instead of refilling the ink cartridge itself, they attach one bag for each color into a black box next to the printer.

The system is not a as fancy (see video below) as the original ink cartridges embedded into the printer but they claim to save, around 50% if you do  the math, over the original HP cartridges. The fact is that this ink bag refilling system makes sense because they feed the new HP OfficeJet Pro-X with PageWide Technology. More info

A team of entrepreneurs from Israel started up this new concept of printer. Kind of a mini “Roomba” robot that prints in any paper size. Another clever idea that is looking for funds at Kickstater. You can still back the project if you like it. (200 US$)

Save 24% ink simply by switching fonts.

00Business efficiency, cost saving, efficiency, printer costs, TonerTags: , , , , , ,

Study made by a 14 years old student of Dorseyville Middle School, Pittsburgh, PA (USA)

coverage study by font

Suvir Mirchandani and his teacher Peter Pinko studied the printing cost for ink at their school and the impact it has in the ecosystem.

They made a long and precise study of the coverage of most used fonts as well as some  alternative fonts with less coverage. Studying proportionally the letters that they used more, they came up with a stunning result of 24% saving in ink usage. That was $21.000 per year of savings for their school. The font they came up with it’s a very readable and nice one: Garamond. It seems a good idea to me, at least to explore different fonts in order to save that extra money. There is nothing to lose.

Have a look at the whole study here

Update:

The study goes further: Suvir Mirchandani want to help US government save $400 millions in ink. Same principal applies : swap font type. read more

First carbon fiber 3D printer.

003D printer, Fun, Modeling, new technologyTags: , , ,

Carbon fiber stronger than steel and light as a plastic material. Used to build aircraft, ships and high-end sport elements as bicycle frames or even prosthetic legs.
It is a very expensive material by the raw material itself and its laborious manufacturing process. Requires placing carbon fibers in layers and wait for the epoxy resin to catalyze.
This process is similar to that used for 3D printing by layers. Marcforg3d engineers saw the similarity, had the idea and got to work. So today we have the first 3D printer that can print carbon fiber.
