Are you in the MPS cost per copy business?

Then, you may have some experience about ghooost printing. It happens specially in color laser printers, when customer decides not to print in color mode in order to save some money. What happens is that every time the printer is turned on and some times also during the working day, the printer itself runs a so called “calibrating process”. More info

Save 24% ink simply by switching fonts.

00Business efficiency, cost saving, efficiency, printer costs, TonerTags: , , , , , ,

Study made by a 14 years old student of Dorseyville Middle School, Pittsburgh, PA (USA)

coverage study by font

Suvir Mirchandani and his teacher Peter Pinko studied the printing cost for ink at their school and the impact it has in the ecosystem.

They made a long and precise study of the coverage of most used fonts as well as some  alternative fonts with less coverage. Studying proportionally the letters that they used more, they came up with a stunning result of 24% saving in ink usage. That was $21.000 per year of savings for their school. The font they came up with it’s a very readable and nice one: Garamond. It seems a good idea to me, at least to explore different fonts in order to save that extra money. There is nothing to lose.

Have a look at the whole study here

Update:

The study goes further: Suvir Mirchandani want to help US government save $400 millions in ink. Same principal applies : swap font type. read more

Why USB printers are a wreck?

00Automatic Meter Reading, Business efficiency, efficiency, Meter Readers, Tech SupportTags: , , , , , , , , ,

USB printers are ideal for occasional use at home but in the office are a wreck. Want to know Why? keep reading.

why USB printer suck

  • Cost per printed page very high

Business model of small printers is based on offering the device purchase cost very low and charge a lot when replacing consumables. The result is a very high price per printed page.

  • Laziness becomes expensive

We all like to have a printer right next to us, so we don’t have have to stand up when printing. Applying this rule in a business office where each employee has his own printer, this entails a very high cost of printing.  It’s much more profitable to have a more efficient larger centralized printer, with more features and a lower cost per copy.

  • Consumables leftovers

How many of us have still in a drawer, a spare ink or toner cartridge of the last printer that we had? The problem of cheap printers is the you don’t repair them,  when they break down you just throw them away. And what do you do with the leftover cartridges, the same. How much it cost us to print those pages? Better not to know.

  • Out of Control

Printers that are not connected to the network, are very difficult to control because often either the printer or the computer is off or disconnected from each other. The result is that it is not possible to monitor automatically and stays out of control.

  • Anti – ecological

Most of the the ink cartridges of USB printers are not recyclable or can’t be re-filled. If we add that the same printers are not repaired and simply thrown away when they break down, we have a very contaminate product. The average of waste per printed page is terrifying.

  • High cost of service

Up to 50 % of calls to IT service are related to printing problems. An important part of them come from small printers that has been move from one computer to another, or  printed above their working capabilities.

Recommendations:

  • In your office, use a reliable network printer which provides the print / scanning volume your team members need.
  • Have the printer connected to the network and monitored with and MPS program allowing better care and a proactive maintenance.
  • Have an automatic toner ordering system so when your printer is running out of toner your supplier sends you over a new one without even having to order it.

3D printers in 2014

003D printer, Modeling, new technologyTags: , , , ,

Form 1 from Formlabs.com

3D printers are revolutionizing the world . Promote creativity in schools, doctors can create customized prostheses or even fabrics with living cells, artist design jewelry with no limits, kids make their own toys… it seam to have no limits.

Some 3D printer brands have already created websites for children where you they can design and print toys at home or send them to a 3D printing facility.

Prices are dropping but 3D printers are still an expensive toy to take home.

It’s interesting to see how Kickstarter and other crowd-funding web portals have boost entrepreneurs to create and bring to the market their own 3D printers. It’s the first time that entrepreneurs step ahead of big brands to introduce a new product line into the market. The big elephants will come in sooner or later and will launch a mass production model hopefully on 2014.

Meanwhile let’s have a look at the 3 technologies that exist today: More info
